Fall Rain: Central Park

The all-day rain scraped the leaves
From the fall-tint trees,
And, without a thought,
Discarded them.

The scales of orange and umber
Had become clown rags,
Streaked with makeup
And tossed away.

Fall 2014

The neighborhood trees

After the rain

Are losing investment.

Their brown-and-green

Ticker tape

Now lies on the ground.

A Sudden Change

A sudden change in the weather.
Yesterday, sunlight silver, fall was
Stirring cool air through park trees
And turning out the seasonal sheets.
First to color them, then to slumber them.

Now, today, summer has reappeared,
Hazing the sky, warming stiff
Bark with a mother’s golden breath.
It tickles the undersides of thick green
Leaves plump as children’s feet.
